10. Vientiane Gallery

 I spent three nights in Vientiane, a more laidback and lowkey capital city, I could not imagine. And, to all intents and purposes, a new city for me. I had spent a day here in 2001 but had not a spark of remembrance or recollection of this, everything felt new.

This post is just a few pictures from the city.

  環島 Huándǎo - means “ journey around the island".  With Bertie (the Giant) beneath me, that’s exactly what I’ve been embarking on.  Riding from Taipei I started to gain height beginning the traverse of a mountain range. Cool and crisp in northern Taiwan, the bus depot was looking particularly lovely this day. 😻  Temple decorations.  I suppose that in the UK, people are enjoying snowdrops, celandines and dog’s mercury. 9. Dustbowls, potholes and cold starts: the road to Vientiane

Following on from the last post, I spent four very restful days in Luang Prabang before returning to the saddle.  Atmospheric scenes at the temple. In the background, you can just make out the stupa at the peak of Mount Phousi where….  ….hoards of tourists descend, sorry, ascend each evening for sunset views. 🌅 This was a real sign of the times moment for me. I know our memories are not always reliable things, often telling us the story we want to hear rather than reality. However, back in 2001, when I came up here for sunset, I’m sure there was no entrance fee, no jostling for the best viewpoint and, of course, no smartphones to capture the moment! Now the daily sunset is something of a circus 🤡 or riot! Lots of Chinese tourists on this visit, which I’m glad about. Backpacking around China on that 2001 trip, talking with young Chinese staff, they often spoke to me with envy about my opportunity to travel that, for them, seemed an unachievable dream. 1. The journey begins!

My mood and motivation to do a blog about this trip have oscillated wildly between, yes, share the joy to no, keep the trip for yourself, it’s a personal experience. Right now my mood is in the former camp so here goes… Bertha, get back in your box, we’re touring again! Having not been serviced for years, I took her to Wheeler’s Retreat in Malmesbury to get fixed and tuned up. Gary did a marvellous job and now she’s ready to roll. Support your local bike shop! 🚲  My first flight in seven years. Mixed feelings - it was a thrill to be in the sky again, jetting off to exotic climes and reconnecting to a lifestyle that was such a big part of my younger self’s identity. But the carbon! How can I justify all that jet fuel being burnt?!? I hope that my non-carbon, pedal power mode of transport will go some way to mitigate my climate change impact and to salve my guilty conscience.
